DNS Amplification Attack

This relatively sophisticated mode of attack uses so-called open resolvers, which are DNS servers that provide their services not only to users of their own network, but to users located outside of it. An attacker from a fake IP address that is identical with the victim’s IP address, sends a large number of relatively small inquiries to these DNS servers, resulting in the victim being overloaded by a number of multiple answers that he/she did not actually request. In terms of the differences in the size of the sent and received inquiries, the attacker can safely overload the victim’s faster line, even though the attacker has a slower link him/herself.
